Other posts and threads have raised green issues as an essential component left out of the original six goals of the European story Prof Garton Ash set out.
Do you think 'sustainability' should be a seventh goal? Arguably it has shaped European identity in the recent past, from Kyoto to a commitment to sustainable development. It is likely to be (by necessity and choice) a defining feature of the future. But should it stand as a separate goal?

I think so. That's certainly something europeans would embrace as a value per se. And far more easy than a common language or education...

How could it not be? Environmentalism and sustainable development go hand-in-hand.

Of course sustainability needs to be an EU priority. And an important part of sustainability is stopping the building of new homes and the expansion of cities. Each new home and each destroyed greenfield site is another nail in the coffin of the environment. We have many single people living in three bedroom terraced houses which could take a whole family - it's just ridiculous.

I don't think that sustainability should be a EU goal because it is a necessity. Provision of oxygen to EU citizens shouldn't be a goal either for the same reason. When we are addressing the six goals sustainability should always be considered.

Sustainability, like ending world poverty, cannot be achieved by the EU alone, it requires global cooperation, so improving levels of sustainability should be a UN issue.
